Beyond Notes and Cards: Why Cnotely Is Now Web + Desktop

We changed how we describe Cnotely

For a long time our one-liner was “notes + cards.” It was accurate: Cnotely helped you take notes and make flashcards. But the more we watched people actually use it, the more we realized that phrase described our features, not your day.

So we changed it. Cnotely is now Web + Desktop — two ways to reach the same knowledge loop.

This isn’t a rename for the sake of marketing. It’s a clearer map of how knowledge actually gets built, and where Cnotely fits.

”Notes + cards” described features, not your day

“Notes + cards” puts the product in the center. It implies a menu: pick notes or pick cards. But nobody sits down and thinks, “today I shall make a card.” They think: “I just read something important and I don’t want to lose it,” or “I have an exam in two weeks,” or “this whiteboard photo should be searchable.”

Those moments happen in two places: in the browser, where you encounter information, and at your desk, where you turn it into understanding. The old label hid that.

”Web + Desktop” describes where you think

The new framing starts from you, not from us:

  • Web is where capture happens. You’re on a page, you clip it, you make a card from a sentence — instantly, with no install.
  • Desktop is where synthesis happens. You sit down, import files, OCR screenshots, write, review, and see the graph.

Both run the same loop — capture → organize → review — that the note platform, card workstation, and desktop app all share. “Web + Desktop” just names the two doors into it. (If you’re deciding which door to use, this comparison breaks it down.)

The loop is the same — the doors are different

Reframing doesn’t change what Cnotely does. It changes how you find it:

  • The browser extension is the lightest door — one click from any page.
  • The web app is the same door, bigger — full editor, no install.
  • The desktop app is the heavy door — offline, OCR, file import, focus.

Pick the door that matches the moment. The room behind all three is identical.

What this unlocks next

Saying “Web + Desktop” out loud forced us to make both doors excellent instead of stretching one to do everything:

  • Web keeps getting faster to capture from — smarter clipping, tighter extension.
  • Desktop keeps getting deeper for synthesis — better OCR, richer graph, smoother review.
  • Sync (optional, opt-in) becomes the quiet bridge that keeps the two in step when you want them to.

The promise underneath never moved: local-first, no tracking, no account unless you ask for backup.

FAQ

Does this mean the web version is going away?

No. Web is a first-class front door and continues to improve. Desktop is additive, not a replacement.

Will the desktop app replace the card workstation?

No. The card workstation lives inside the desktop app and on the web. You can review cards in either place.

Is Cnotely still free?

Yes — both Web and Desktop are free to use, account-free, with optional cloud backup.

Closing

“Notes + cards” told you what Cnotely was. “Web + Desktop” tells you where Cnotely meets you — in the browser where you read, and at the desk where you understand.
