Cloud sync
Cnotely is local-first: everything works fine offline, and the cloud is only used when you choose to sign in. This article explains how sync works and how to get the most out of it.
Local-first by default
By default, all your notes and cards are stored locally — in your browser's local storage (extension and web app) or on your computer (desktop app). There is no account and no upload unless you sign in.
Enable cloud sync
- Open app.cnotely.com
- Sign in or create an account
- Sync is enabled automatically from then on — notes, cards and review progress are backed up and kept consistent across your devices
What stays in sync
- Notes (inbox and knowledge base) and review cards (the review queue)
- The web app and the desktop app share the same snapshot protocol, so switching between them keeps your data identical
- The desktop app pulls your latest snapshot from the cloud when you sign in
- The browser extension checks your sign-in status before sending captures to the web app; if you are not signed in, it guides you to log in first
Privacy
Cloud data is transmitted over HTTPS and stored encrypted. You own your data: export a backup at any time (see Data, privacy & uninstall) and delete your cloud data if you stop using the service.
Troubleshooting
- Changes do not appear on another device: make sure both devices are signed in with the same account, then refresh the web app or reopen the desktop app.
- A “cloud service not configured” banner is shown: the sync endpoint is unreachable — check your network connection and retry; the banner disappears once the endpoint responds.
- Extension captures do not arrive: sign in inside the extension first (or in the web app), then project again.
- Sign-in fails: check that your network can reach the sign-in endpoint, and try the other sign-in method if one is available.
