Installation
Which browsers are supported?
Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Firefox via their stores; any Chromium-based browser (360 Secure Browser, QQ Browser, Opera, Brave, ...) via the zip package. The web app runs in any modern browser.
The store is slow or not accessible in my region. What can I do?
Use the zip package to load the extension manually — see How to install the Cnotely extension for browser-by-browser steps.
Why is my manually loaded extension gone after I restart Firefox?
Firefox removes temporary add-ons on restart by design. For a permanent install on Firefox, please use the Firefox Add-ons store version.
Usage
The Cnotely right-click menu does not appear.
Make sure the extension is enabled in your browser (see the extensions page), then reload the tab you are working on — context menus are registered on freshly loaded pages.
The extension icon is not in my toolbar.
Pin it manually: click the puzzle-piece icon in the toolbar and pin Cnotely. If it still does not appear, re-enable the extension and restart the browser.
My capture did not arrive in the web app.
Projection requires sign-in: sign in in the web app (or in the extension), then capture again. See cloud sync for details.
Can I use Cnotely without an account?
Yes. Everything is local-first: the extension, web app and desktop app all work offline without an account. Sign-in only adds cloud sync and backup.
Data
Where is my data stored?
Locally by default — in your browser's local storage (extension and web app) or on your computer (desktop app). If you sign in, cloud sync keeps an encrypted copy so you can restore on another device.
Can I lose my data?
Local data can be lost if you clear browser data, switch to another device, or uninstall the extension without syncing. Export a backup regularly and keep sync enabled for the important stuff.
How do I export my notes?
Notes support multiple export formats — PDF, DOCX, HTML and Markdown — from the editor. Exports are the simplest way to back up.
Sync
My changes do not show up on another device.
Confirm both devices are signed in with the same account, then refresh the web app or reopen the desktop app to pull the latest snapshot.
Is my cloud data private?
Cloud data is transmitted over HTTPS and stored encrypted. You own your data and can export or delete it at any time — see Data, privacy & uninstall.
Other
Is Cnotely free?
Yes — the extension, web app and desktop app are completely free, with no in-app purchases.
What about open source?
The Note Platform and the Memory Card Workstation are open source on GitHub. The browser extension is closed-source but stores everything locally and never collects browsing data.
