Data, privacy & uninstall
Privacy is not a setting — it is our architecture. This article explains where your data lives, how to back it up, what the extension can access, and how to remove everything if you leave.
Where your data lives
- Browser extension and web app: stored locally in your browser's local storage (IndexedDB). No account, no upload.
- Desktop app: stored in local files on your computer, works fully offline.
- Cloud (only if you sign in): an encrypted copy of your notes and cards, used for backup and cross-device sync.
Sign-in is optional. If you never sign in, nothing ever leaves your device.
What the extension can access
The extension only reads the DOM of the page you are on when you explicitly activate a capture action (right-click clip, screenshot OCR). It does not collect browsing history, and it only sends the content you choose to save. Uninstalling the extension deletes all its local data.
Export a backup
Notes support PDF, DOCX, HTML and Markdown export from the editor — the simplest way to back up or move your content. We recommend exporting regularly if you keep critical notes.
Uninstall
Browser extension
- Open your browser's extensions page (
chrome://extensions/oredge://extensions/, or Firefox's add-ons manager) - Find Cnotely and click Remove
Removing the extension deletes its local data in that browser. If you signed in, your cloud copy is kept — you can sign in again later to restore, or delete it from your account.
Desktop app
- Close the app
- Uninstall it through Windows Settings → Apps → Cnotely, or the Control Panel
Your rights
You own your data: access, export, or delete it at any time. The full details are in our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
